Spring Fling Topic

If you had your most perfect dream home with all the land you want and no job(of course!) , what kind of garden would you have? Wow! All the land and the time to tend it. My home would first of all be a log home near a coastal area very close to a lighthouse or it could be the lighthouse I would be most happy either way. A small veggie garden with tomatoes, peppers, zucchini, melons. A little herb garden by my kitchen window with basil, chive and thyme and mint. It would have a rose garden with heirloom roses out the back door and the house would be surrounded flower gardens. Butterfly bushes to attract the hummingbirds and butterflies. And lastly tall trees for shade on the hot summer days. Sigh!

Dream on Mcduff!

Spring FLing Topic of the Week

When did you start drinking coffee? In high school or college- up for all nighters? I started drinking coffee in high school. My parents always drank it everyday so there was the morning ritual- coffee and the paper- sorry to say there were also cigarettes involved too. But that kind of started the taste for it. At the same time, my friends decided it was cool to hang out at a local restaurant( Frisch's) and drink and endless cup of coffee for hours! Remember when they didn't charge for refills! We thought we were the coolest, you know. Coffee was just coffee back then- no big cult following like now. Funny how your taste changes- and your ability to handle all the caffeine too! Back then a drank it for the social thing, wanting to look more mature etc. Now, I stumble to the coffee maker every morning and grind beans in my sleep just to hold that steaming cup of joe under my chin in order to pry my eyes open. Life- ever changing :)

Yarn store and vacation

My DH and I left for a spring break trip south a couple weeks ago with a laundry list of things to accomplish along the way. LIttle did he know that my list included a couple yarn stores. We stopped to visit our DD in Hunstville, Al to see her Wind Ensemble Concert on Friday March 28th. THey were playing in a very special venue with guest artists and special music. I was fabulous. The highlight of the performance was of course Rhapsody in Blue
. The picture is not so good but you get the idea. We snuck off to visit a local yarn shop that is fairly new in Huntsville. It is called Yarn Expressions. I highly recommend a visit if you are in the neighborhood. Friendly owner and knitters are welcome to hang and knit which is thing I always look for in a shop. Check out the pictures of the shop and their online shop too. http://www.yarnexpressions.com/

Lighthouse

I received a wonderful second package from Kat, my Longing for Spring swap partner. Kat lives in NJ and noticed I love lighthouses. She sent me a figurine of the Cape May Light a New Jersey landmark. I have visited this light which makes it even more special. Thanks again Kat for the super packages. I am enjoying everything tremendously.

It's Friday!

It has been a long and difficult week. New challenges at work- one of my little students lost their mom this week and I have grave concerns over the stepfather being able to care for her medical needs. I think of her often and wonder how she is doing. They have not contacted the school and I worry. Good news though- my DD got home at 3:30am today. I am happy to have her home for a week. She sounds like she is sick though- voice is hoarse. May have to take her Redi-Med in the am. She has been Knitting- look what she made her lighthouse loving mom. It is a little hard to see but it is warm yellow cloth with a lighthouse . I love it! Looking forward to a restful weekend.

Could it be...

The sun is trying to shine. The snow is melting a little. I saw a robin hopping around the flower bed. It really is going to be spring. It even smells like spring. My daughter will be home for spring break on Friday. I can't wait. I know she can't either. We have 2 more weeks until our spring and I sm ready to go. The last one out of Fort Wayne, lock the door and turn off the lights.

Enough weather updates. Knitting- now that is a subject I can write alot about. I frogged an almost complete pair of socks. I was loopng a pair of green sock in Farmhouse yarn. SOrry to say that I absolutely hated the stuff. I tried to like it. I really did. The colorway is a lovely shamrock green but the yarn was stiff and way too thick for my taste. I will gift it to my DD for her hats. Not that I don't have anything to knit now- a pair of tofutsies and the most luscious Snitches in a pastel colorway called - Cottage. I will post pix when I have more it knitted- just a couple inches now. The pattern is one I found on Knitting pattern Central called Cafe Curtains.

Buddy's Day out!

Looks like someone enjoyed the snow day

Had a very wet snow that my penguin buddy created by Sarah of NYC seemed to enjoy. He had to don his shades because of the glare! I stayed inside where it was warm and finished one of the butter peeps socks. Check it out---

I chose not to make the cables on the foot. They were a bit thick and I thought that it might be uncomfortable in shoes. I did get part of the second felted clog done. Maybe I can felt them by the weekend.

Lazy, Lazy Weekend

Not much happening this weekend- I have not had to answer to anyone this weekend. It was very strange to do what I wanted, watch what I wanted got to bed when I wanted. It almost felt like a vacation. My DH was teaching a seminar in Tampa and I stayed home in beautiful snowy Indiana. It was really kind of nice to have the time to myself. Lots of knitting was done. I am working on a pair of Dream in Color Smooshy socks in Butter Peeps , a lovely shade of creamy spring yellow. I am trying to avoid the dreaded second sock syndrome by working both socks at the same time. I adjusted the pattern for the loop and have been working the scks in stages. RIght now one sock is complete to the heel and one has turned the corner and the gusset decreases are done. Time to switch off again. I think this process maybe ok but I did happen to choose a fussy pattern with cables and such. They will be striking when finished- at the same time! Whoo Hoo! Also made one Fiber Trends felted clog. I like the pattern and can't wiat to make the other. Must I go to work tomorrow ? :(

WInter Wonderland?

We just started February and I am so tired of winter. It has been a weird combination of weather too this winter with thunderstorms and tornados- now what is with that!!! A snow day did help to get some knitting projects done. FInished Charlie Brown socks and most of a dream in color baby sweater PLUS started the first STR socks. I am enjoying those but was surprised to see the dye on my hands after I knit with it. I have red stripes on my fingers :)

My friend and fellow knitster girl, Natalie and I are going to UFO night at Knitting Today. We are having movie night, popcorn and Lucy Neatby flicks and knitting of course! I do have a couple finished projects to show off.

DD, Amanda finished a mitten on her Nifty Knitter. It really turned out quite well. I was having a hard time imagining how it could be done but it it possible. SHe wants to make a scarf from Koigu and I am going to get her the yarn for Valentine's Day. Nothing like yarn to make a girls heart beat faster. Kntting helps break up some of the studying she has to do in engineering school. Beats the heck out of fluids class(whatever that is!)

Hope to sign up for an end of Winter swap- Longing For Spring. Sounds like the thing to cure the winter blahs! Long live spring!

Topic of the week #2

Has my knitting changed for the winter season? I little bit. I welcome knitting baby blankets for the warmth but I still am into the socks. They work no matter the time of year. I did make a bunch Christmas quickie knits like dishcloths and slipper socks . I do like to make more difficult projects in the winter- the ones that take more concentration. I have Thelonius sock from Cookie A to make this winter. They come 3 rd on the list right now behind a baby sweater and my Charlie Brown Valentine socks. Gotta go- Bye for now, Jl

Cocoa Swap Questionaire

Time to get this questionaire up- I tried the other day but I had a super headache and just couldn't think straight. So here goes-

1. What is your fav way to drink cocoa? Prepared with moo or water? Homemade or store bought. Tea cup or mug. If I were being honest- really honest- I love to add cocoa mix( I confess store bought) to a cup of coffee and add some creamer to smooth it out. It is on of my favorite after work relaxing treats. I am a mug sort of gal- something I can get my hands around and hold under chin to feel that steamy warmth. Ahhhhh!

2. Marshmallows or whipped cream- gooey yummy marshmallows

Yarn/Knitting/Crochet
1. What is your favorite type of yarn? What colors? I love sock yarn- especially and super soft merino wool. Colors are pretty wide open for me- I like variegated types, heathers or solids. Not super fond of solids in orange or purple but any thing else is great.

2. Knit/ Crochet or both- I am a both type person- I definitey knit more than crochet .

3.What are your favorite type of needles, would you like to try something new? I have used double points in bamboo for socks but have started using Addi turbos in the magic loop process for many sock patterns and I love them. I have a couple HiyaHiya circs too( less expensive than Addis). Maybe the Harmony needles from Knitpicks would be interesting. I'm not sure.

4. Do you have a healthy supply of notions? I think I am good with those things.

5. What one thing do you keep thinking you need to buy for your habit ( outside of yarn). I couls use a clipboard or stand to hold patterns. Mine are always falling off my lap(I use page protectors).

6.What is your favorite ' quick knit/crochet' pattern? I think dishcloths are a quick knit item that I enjoy.

Miscellaneous

1. What is your fav thing to do in the winter? I enjoy sitting inside knitting up my winter projects and sipping my favorite warm beverages- tea, coffee and cocoa. Not a cold weather activity type person. I have had back surgery and am afraid of falling in the winter's trecherous weather.

2. What is your fav animal? I have always had a soft spot for penguins. I used to collect them. They are always dressed for a formal occasion after all!

3. Do you get the winter blahs? Yes, Yes a thousand times yes- winter is a bad time for me- Part of the reason I joined this swap is to brighten the dreary Indiana days.

4. What is your favorite way to beat the blahs? Try to stay busy- take weekend trips , pamper myself with pedicures or facials. Just makes me feel better.

5. What is the thing you are most looking forward to this spring? Strange to say but I love the way spring smells. I can't wait to hear the birds and make pans for spring break!!!!

6. What are your favorite treats? Chocolate -of course- nuts, and dried fruit too.

7. What is your favorite board game? I used to love the game Mastermind.

8. Do you have children( furry or human)? I have 2 grown children, 23 and 20 and 2 dogs- Oreo and Scooter. Plus a recently adopted guinea pig ( my daughters) Peanut Butter.

9. Do you have allergies or special considerations your partner should know about? No allergies but not fond of cigarette smoke. SPecial considerations? Hmmm- Consider this winter statistic- 98% of Americans would exclaim "Oh Shit" when sliding off the icy road into a ditch- the other 2% mostly from Wisconsin and Minnesota would say " Hold my beer and watch this" Happy WInter:)
